Theatre NOVA presents:
THE LAST WIDE OPEN
by Audrey Cefaly
Music by Matthew M. Nielson
Polish adaptation by Katarzyna Müller
Michigan Premiere | Musical
May 22 – June 14, 2026
A love song in three movements.
Over the course of three brief acts, the lives of weary waitress Lina and immigrant dishwasher Mikolaj play out in parallel universes—each a variation on a theme of longing, chance, and connection. With echoes of fate and flashes of magic in the mundane, this tender, time-bending story asks: what if love is less about destiny, and more about timing? Directed by Diane Hill.
Directed by Diane Hill, The production stars real-life partners Josie Herman as Lina and Michael Alan Herman as Mikołaj, bringing an added layer of authenticity and connection to this deeply felt story. Natalie Rose Sevick appears as Stagehand, supporting the show’s live music.
The production team includes Briana O’Neal (stage manager), Craig Hane (set designer/builder), Jade Guerriero (lighting designer), Toni Davison (costume designer), Kat Walsh (intimacy director), and Avalon McNew (assistant to the lighting designer). Comissioned by Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Polish translation commissioned by American Blues Theater.

What Audiences Are Saying:
"I am very pleased with Nova and plan to return for more. You are an important cultural project in this theater-thin city."
"IT WAS AWESOME. I laughed, I cried, I gushed about it afterwards. It was different than other past shows with the music but not a musical. The multi-verse presentation is very on trend and was done superbly with with fantastic acting. Another fantastic Theatre Nova production."- Pai Meng
"We absolutely enjoyed this play. It was heart warming, creative and very entertaining!!!!"- Debra Jackson
"Theatre Nova has done it again! “The Last Wide Open” is a breath of fresh air! The three actors are expressive, charming and delightful, while adeptly navigating issues of trust, loneliness, and interpersonal connection. Beautifully directed by Diane Hill! Kudos to all!" -Anne Bauman

"Excellent production. Loved the story and the acting!"- Susan Hawkins
"I was fascinated by the concept of parallel timelines. Don't we all wish we could get a do-over? Well they don't always go as planned!"- Mary Margaret Serpento
"Great show. Touching moments. Actors were terrific"
"Always a pleasant, friendly environment - total commitment to excellence."
"I have gone to TN productions for many years. Actors and playwrights are magicians. Especially ones who step out of the formulas and take us with them.
"The show was great. Loved the small intimate set. The story and actors were wonderful and I intend to be back again for more." -Christopher Avery
"Just saw "The Last Wide Open" at Theatre Nova and it was thoroughly charming. ""I have now seen it twice and it was fabulous both times. Love is messy, and that came through in so many fun ways! This acting trio is really effective, taking you through all of the genuine ups and downs of important relationships. Knowing the leads are themselves a couple adds another level of appreciation, as they act their way to recommitting themselves to each other again and again, sometimes twice a day! This is my fourth Theater Nova experience and be back again soon…" -Ben Bohnsack
"We enjoyed it very much. The story, performances, and production were very well done. Thank you."
"Was a pleasant experience from beginning to end. Loved the intimate atmosphere and thought actors did a great job" -Elizabeth Binasio

"It was amazing. What a delightful show. And the actors were all phenomenal. Everything I always look for in live theater: thought-provoking, humorous, serious, heartfelt, awesome talent, etc… etc … etc … it simply checks all the boxes!" - Lori Venable
"It was incredible. Very well done. The actors were excellent. I think this was the best show I have ever seen at Nova. They were incredible. Most plays are high quality at Nova but this one was excellent, easily of Broadway quality." -Carol Crotty
"Charming in the extreme! The charisma of the couple who may or may not fall in love makes this play shine, along with the cleverly seamless scene changes." -Nancy Wright
